Merry Christmas, everyone!

I don't usually make a big deal out of celebrities or sports stars-- they are just people, after all. I have to admit though, I will always have a special place in my heart for Kurt Warner. Not only did he take my beloved (and beleaguered) Rams to the Super Bowl, but he continues to show with his ACTIONS what a man should be. It is hard to cheer for the Cardinals now, but I will, or any other team that Kurt plays for, as long as he is playing. On this day of special gifts, it is great to see someone giving back.

Support Your Local Game Store!

GMI Card

This Holiday season, I really, really , REALLY want to encourage all of my friends and family to support our local game store, GMI Games. I have a special place in my heart for all game stores-- as a young geek, it was stores like GMI where I first found acceptance, met friends and had my mind expanded far beyond the abusive, trrifying home I was raised in. Stores like GMI are becoming increasingly rare-- internet sales, e-bay and big box stores make it nearly impossible for a small store to compete. What you have to understand about a great game store is that they are so much more than their merchandise. There are hundreds of kids here in Riverside like I was as a kid: lonely, a little too smart for their own good, poor social skills, love to read. Yes, we're geeks and nerds, but we are people, too. Kids that get into gaming form strong, loyal friendships, generally do better in school, watch much less tv, and stay out of trouble. Gaming, even Dungeons & Dragons, is good for kids-- and multiple studies show that kids that play games with their parents growing up are significantly less likely to do drugs or have sex in their teen years.

The store is run by Rob and Katherine, two exceptional people who work VERY hard and genuinely care for the kids that hang out in their store. They often stay open very, very late-- not because there is business, but because there are still kids hanging out that have no one to pick them up, and nowhere else to go. WalMart sure wouldn't do that.

So, please make a visit to GMI this season, or if you don't live in Riverside, call them or use their (primitive) website. To my Christian friends, if you have a concern about anything they sell, drop me a line and let's talk. I will tell you, normally the only "Christians" who enter their store are Jerks for Jesus that condemn them and say hateful things, leaving only bad feelings and pamphlets behind. For our community to rally around this amazing, family owned business would be good, don't you agree?

Plus, they have all kinds of games, and can order you anything you want (Katherine got us "Pit" in 3 days!). For all you Settlers of Cataan junkies, they have all the expansions! They also have paintball and hobby/craft supplies, and models. Well, pictures speak louder than words-- see below. Thank you for reading about one of my favorite places!

Valuable Lesson:

When looking online for an image to use in a memo, avoid searching for "Magic Wand"...

Ballet Night!

Ballet_night_9I had a date with my baby-girl last night, and what a wonderful time we had! I found out through someone at work about the ballet production of Cinderella being performed by the Inland Pacific Ballet at the Bridges Auditorium on the campus of the Claremont Colleges. Mama bought her a pretty new dress and painted her toes-- I can't believe how grown-up she is getting! I had forgotten how beautiful the area around the campus there is. We had a WONDERFUL time-- I highly recommend going to everyone. The tickets are really affordable, the auditorium is beautiful, and the production was fantastic. The show is a great length for younger kids, and has a break in the middle to help them get the wiggles out. Even though some guy was a big jerk and made Sadie cry, another man came along and more than made up for it. It runs for another week and you can buy tickets online or get them there. Thank you, Lord for my incredible, smart, funny, sweet, sensitive and amazing daughter. She is an incredible blessing in my life. More pictures in an album on the right!

It's Official

Xbox360package After years and years of being a hard-core PC game player... I have a console system of my very own. Oh sure, in the past I was able to ignore the fact that I had a Game Cube and a PS2-- after all, those belonged to the kids. No denying it now, though-- that brand new XBox 360 is all Papa. My set-up came with NBA Live 2007 or something-- I have no interest in basketball, anybody want to trade for it? Or is that the game that everyone's system comes with already?

Fish Tank for Sale

Fishtank1Ok, wierd to break a month-long blogging fast with a "for sale" post, but there will be better stuff to come, promise. Some good friends of ours just recently moved and were going to throw out their 40 gallon salt water aqaurium rather than deal with it, as they had really let it become a mess.  Well, if you know me, you know THAT was not going to happen. I brought it home, changed all the water with fresh, balanced sea-water, cleaned all the rocks, adjusted the temperature with a brand new thermostat controlled heater, cleaned up the filter and stand, added a pine canopy and lights, added an air-line for additional circulation, and stocked it with 4 electric blue damsels and 10 hermit crabs. Now it is clean and beautiful and ready for someone to take it home and create something wonderful! 40 gallons is enough to add about 5-6 more fish depending on size. I will be happy to lend any and all advice and help to whomever takes it home. All I am asking is $200, just the cost of what I put into it to make it nice. It is about an $800 value. Comment here with an e-mail if you are interested!Fishtank2_1 Fishtank3

Anna Nicole

There are a million easy ways to make fun of Anna Nicole, but mostly it just makes me sad. Here is a serious question I have: Anna grew up here in the USA, so clearly she has been exposed to Jesus. So seeing as she has had the opportunity to accept Christ, but chose not to, is she damned to Hell? Does she get a second chance after physical death?

Dreaming

Whenever I have caffeine at night (say, past 7:00) it won't prevent me from sleeping-- but I don't sleep very well. I tend to drift in and out of deep sleep, and wake up too early. On the other hand, I always have excellent, very vivid dreams the whole night. If I have no caffeine, I sleep soundly all the way through and can wake up at 6:00 feeling great-- but usually no dreams, or at least nothing very memorable. The good sleep almost isn't worth the trade-off for me-- I really enjoy the intense dreams! Anyone else experience this?
